In this Episode of theShugrHeds…
…Ben got the opportunity to interview NomadiDaddy(Stephen Skinner) when we met up with them recently. Stephen has travelled the globe and has spent a lot of time in Antarctica. Ben spent a whole term study Antarctica, So he was thrilled!
I LOVE the gym!
I know that sounds weird, but I do! Whenever I say that to people, they say something like “I can’t stick to it – It’s just too boring!”. My first reaction is “then you’re not doing it right!”. It’s true, if you have time to be there thinking to yourself, hey this is BORING, you are not working fast or hard enough.
Imagine you are running away from a hungry lion or lifting a tree trunk that has fallen on you. You wouldn’t be there thinking, Oh…when’s dinner? It’s a matter of mentally preparing yourself. You can perform an awful lot better if you channel your mind into what you are actually doing. Be here now.
When I am increasing my weights to a new personal best, I like to imagine I have a ball of chi energy sitting in my solar plexus which radiates outwards. It’s is bright, hot and powerful as the sun. When I will it to spread, some of the energy travels up my torso into my arms, down my legs, into my back etc. I feel the light and the warmth touch my muscles.
And so the lift goes with very little effort. It genuinely works. Then I let my normal lifting mode take over and before I know it, i’m on my last exercise.
Nothing clears out the mind like concentrating on lifting a weight. In fact, the “monkey mind” is actually very destructive when it comes to energy flow. If I am about to lift something heavy, and then the thought of an unpaid gas bill pops into my head, I can’t lift it! It’s the same if you catch another gym goers eye just before you lift. Your energy just disappears!
When this happens I have to regroup, refocus and try again. But the lovely thing is that when I have accomplished this, it feels like I have had a mental holiday. I have switched off from it all for one whole hour! That’s worth its weight in gold!
My very own sanctuary
I used to eat and drink to cheer myself up. It’s REALLY not a good idea. Now, if I am upset by something, I treat myself to a whole afternoon there. I do an hour of Cardio, an hour of weights, then I go for a swim, a sauna, jacuzzi and lastly a hot shower. This all comes under my membership cost and I feel like a million dollars!
I have become fitter and stronger and you can feel proud of yourself for improving not damaging yourself.
One of my favourite feelings is when you have recently increased your weights and a few days after the workout you can feel “the burn”. Your muscles feel tight, endorphins and testosterone are flying through your veins. As I said in another post, I have been slim and buff just a handful of times in my life (mostly in my 20’s).
Even at 41, I still vividly remember how great I felt at the time and thoroughly enjoyed the extra attention I received from the fairer sex! (This is obviously irrelevant now that Mrs ShugrHed is in the picture ?)
“The burn” does bring these memories flooding back. If this is my interpretation of the mid-life crisis – BRING IT ON!
