Nasty Little Bug
Back in November last year, Rachel contracted a very nasty cold bug. It dragged on and on for what seemed like forever. it kept coming and going and coming back with a Vengeance.
Over Easter of this year, I finally contracted it myself. oh joy I thought to myself!
We were actually on a short break at the time up north. We had gone to see a Monster truck show In a place called Santa Pod – which was great! After the end of the first day, I felt like I was about to die. When we got back to the hotel, I slept all night and all of the next day. We decided between us that I was so Ill that we had to come home the day after. 🙁
Whilst at home I spent the next week recuperating and trying to get over the cold. By the end of the second week I felt like I was getting much better. I started to go to the gym again, I did less intensive exercises than usual. At first it seemed to help as it was clearing out my lungs. There was all sorts of Horrid stuff coming up and out and I felt like I was getting better. Better out than in, poisoning your body!
But then bang, it hit me like a steam train. I was back in bed, sleeping most of the day and night. My body had basically shut down so it could fight this bug.
Never a Good Time
I work for myself so I don’t get sick pay. So stopping work for illness is twice as bad!
My lungs became completely filled with this horrible sticky gunk. Normal coughing became ineffective to clear it. I actually had to find a new way of coughing and sitting so that I used gravity to help me clear my lungs. I ended up having to kneel on my chair and stoop down so that I ended up looking like a strange question mark!
Sometimes the coughing fit would last for more than a few minutes at a time. That doesn’t sound a lot – but believe me, it is! My lungs felt like they’d come flying out of my body! My throat was scratched and I was always left breathless, dizzy and feeling nauseous. One time I felt my throat constrict so much that I had to stop eating as my airways just blocked!
The young and the infirm
I am reasonably fit and healthy and all I could think of was how are the very young and the very old coping with this illness? I imagine it would be easy for them to get in grave danger with this bug. After suffering for nearly 6 weeks on my own, I finally made an appointment to see the doctor. they couldn’t believe how long I’ve left it before visiting them! they immediately referred me to the local hospital for a chest scan. it turns out that I had pneumonia! WOW! I was given antibiotics and told to keep a close eye on my own recovery.
Down to only 2 senses!
When the course of antibiotics have finished, I felt very little difference from at the start. I went back to the doctor and got a second course of antibiotics. these actually did something!
the gunk started to clear in my chest the coughing got less and the head cold receded. after another month my sense of hearing, smell and taste gradually started to return after an absence of almost 2 months!
it’s now almost July and I still get Mild symptoms as before. Rachel is still suffering with mild symptoms too and that is 7 months on! I’ve never been so ill and for so long in my life. it was quite an eye opener. At one stage I felt like the cold just wouldn’t never go 🙁
